…all over again…same as it ever was…plus ça change, plus c’est la méme chose!:::
Highjacking the “Rainbow” Brand, all the myths, memes, & brainbaubles.
19 years ago I tried to tell him nicely, but he wouldn’t listen…
Back then the old “Ozark Rainbow Bulletin” (“ORB”) mailing list got grabbed, a “welcomehere.org” website went up, and the Peace Conspiracy (Inc.) was fronting commercial festivals AND the Ozark regional gatherings — and the previously cohesive ‘Missouri Family’ was shredded in division.NOW the stakes are steeper, it’s not so cute, and I’m not so nice…
In this unprecedented moment of epidemic crisis, legions of Rainbow Gathering builders, workers & devotees have seen the compelling need to hold off this year, to “OmFromHome” in a higher public interest and the highest spirit — but this dude still ain’t listening, putting the reputation & future of the gatherings at risk, and fracturing the Family nationwide.Too bad his promotional talents are so misguided…
here is some lucid history:::

Hey There Lookingheart, Izzat You & Who-All Else?
Got this THANG a few days ago, starting out like this:
Welcome to the rainbow-family mailing list! ……[full msg below]
I just sent an ‘unsubscribe’, not cuz I want to be out of the loop, but as a point of principle… cuz I ain’t in no ‘rainbow family’ and it don’t exist and the list in this name & form may make you & others vulnerable.
We talked about this some time ago… how “Peace Conspiracy” is set up as an actual organization, and your activities promoting gatherings could be construed as ‘sponsorship’ — in which capacity you can no longer say that you Can’t sign a permit. This ‘majordomo’ list now explicitly links “RF” with “PC”… stuff gets out, “Rainbow” is a Web hotword, etc. It all compounds the legal fiction that “Rainbow Family” is an ‘unincorporated association’, and confounds it with a real organization taking a visible leading role.
Not trying to rain on the parade or disfunk the good energy… just being watchful, knowing the issues that are being argued in the courts, and how to preserve the best of them. A list is OK, done right — efforts to improve security are much appreciated, now put clean nomenclature & sensible shoes on the idea, and it can walk without compromising our individual standing as gatherers — the most pivotal 1st Amendment basis of the gatherings, still to be properly argued and adjudged.
Suggesting 2 simple premises in making & using eM lists:
Don’t call it (or anything) “rainbow-family”… too loaded. (Ask Rob…!)
[ How about the ‘Ozark Peace’ list, or even ‘Rainbow News’ list, etc.
[ Semantic Rule of Thumb: ‘Rainbow’ is a good adjective but a bad noun.
It is Your Private List of friends & consenting recipients, and that’s all. [ ‘Peace Conspiracy’ (or You Personally) can do this as a special interest
[ & service, with care that no “RF” affiliation or ‘agency’ can be construed.
[ Personal consent & confidentiality are key: Mebbe best to have folks
[ Opting In (subscribe) deliberately vs. Opting Out (unsubscribe) by default.
The website could be more problematic as a public forum:
http://www.peaceconspiracy.org/rainbow
In this context ‘peaceconspiracy’ can be a host domain for ‘rainbow’ gathering news without engaging “PC” the organization in ‘Rainbow Family’ bizness. Just do it as clean Journalism… stick to hard 3rd-person reportage of events & ideas, avoid 1st-person advocacy or sponsorship. Consider carefully the DISCLAIMERS Rob has attached to the ‘Welcomehome’ site, as the Feds have targeted info providers as ‘Rainbow Family Leaders’ in the past, and they look for Anything that might prove that ‘Rainbow’ is a ‘Group’. (The US Atty at the Erie trial of Baxter & Greenfeather, Oct.’97: “If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck, it’s a duck.” A Hallmark Moment in legal logic.)
Let’s figger out how to work this. Note that this little diatribe is cc’d to my ‘CyberHuddle’ list of discreet, seasoned veterans & wizards who may have some good ideas on these topics. This can be a useful discussion, RSVP.
in love of service, in service of love… scottie a.
