* * NEWSFLASH: * *
There is no Santa Claus, and there are no Rainbow Lawyers.
They are not real — although many keep believing in both,
and a few keep pretending to be one or the other.
If you need an explanation of the first proposition, your psychiatrist is a quack. As for the latter, your lingering hopes and nagging perplexities are understandable, and deserving of the truth. With regrets for your misconceptions, basically there are two reasons:
1) There is no “Rainbow Family”, so it can’t HAVE lawyers. It is a phantom of our affinities, with no embodiment or ability to act in commercial or official affairs… so any lawyer purporting or appearing to represent it in such capacities is a fraud or a fool.
2) There Are “Rainbow Gatherings” with lawyers inside & nearby. They are phantom events of convergence and diaspora within weeks… and if a few lawyers step out as advocates for attendees and their rights, it is another transient thing of that moment, then they go home too.
The problem is that the Law and the World keep going after July 15, as do the legal issues of the Gatherings, not confined to a brief span of summer days. The real work takes perseverence, dealing with the last afflictions and anticipating the next. It’s the nature of the business, needing continuity in the Rainbow spirit of contributive consensus — ‘seeing what needs to be done and doing it’ — the other 48 weeks each year, Off the Land.
I have been in the trenches for a long time, documenting facts and making cases to assist victims of First Amendment and Civil Rights abuses at gatherings, with some success. So I know what it takes, how key players have to step up and follow through, and whether their cooperations suffice to sustain the real work.
Suffice it to say: It Ain’t Been Getting Done. Ergo, “…no Rainbow Lawyers“… in any effective or meaningful sense.
* * LEGAL DISCLAIMER: **
I hereby disclaim the legal Inertia that plagues the mission
of protecting the Gatherings, and the Rights of those who join.
Where I have been affiliated with ongoing failure to act, I QUIT.
Realistically the ranks are thin, a handful of serious players in ‘Rainbow’ policy and law — all Boomers, nearly all males, dispersed around the country, self-centered, divisive, busy and distracted. For decades these matters have been the domain of the same bunch of people, now “Elders”, and others have deferred to their worldly wisdom (or rhetoric), and ducked their territorial elbows.
I’ve tried to work with all of them on the legal problems of the Gatherings, enduring lots of insults and frustrations in these efforts; there have been momentary wins, but no lasting solutions. In fact our vanities, cross-purposes, and inanities persist, and the problems are being passed on to “Youngers” who are unprepared — never given mentorship, nor coming forward on their own.
The toughest part is standing before victims of official abuse, getting their stories and hearing their hopes for help, giving sympathy and a sense of assurance that they will get some. I can’t bullshit these folks. Knowing the stakes for their rights and everyone’s, I’ve tried hard to keep that promise… but I can’t do so alone. Then seeing the slack of the few legal crew, and the likely neglect of their cause, it’s getting hard to justify their wishful belief, or to sustain the ruse:
In truth, the leadership needed of ‘Rainbow’ wonks & attorneys — to push research & factfinding, marshal colleagues & support, foster good cases on real issues — is not happening. Of late and for years, they put up no initiative and can’t be relied on… I disavow all the discooperation.
My suggestion to able Youngers:
Throw The Old Bums Out… or at least, pick our brains, get our information, and retire us gently. The only solution is to Take Over, step up with your own mad crews & badass lawyers & new energies — maybe with enough unity, skill, panache, and cajones to Win Back Your Rights. And if any Old Bums gripe about it, tell ’em I’m on Your side.
Good luck to the grandkids getting free.
