PCU_//\_Free Assembly Project__
~ an Association of Volunteers, dedicated to preserving Constitutional Freedoms on Public Lands, upholding Ancestral Rights on Native Lands, and supporting Citizen Stewardship on All Lands. ~
It got started in July 1993, when folks converged in Washington, DC to fight new restrictions against the “Rainbow Gatherings” in the National Forests: In a circle council in “Peace Park” across from the White House, they organized to inform the public and lobby Congress, and “PCU” was born on a letterhead — People for Compassion and Understanding — a great origin story of grassroots consensus and cooperation to protect civil liberties.
It morphed into PCU_//\_Free Assembly Project soon after, sustaining efforts for the gatherings as a pure exercise of voluntary assembly under the First Amendment, a distinctive cultural & spiritual forum, and a pivotal controversy of policy and law. Over the years, the work naturally extended to issues of political speech & protest, indigenous rights, environmental actions, and land reform around the country.
We have done leading-edge projects in the woods and on the streets, trained and deployed legal observers, and documented official abuses to support constitutional defenses & civil actions when necessary — in order to protect the right of Peaceable Assembly, as a democratic society requires.
•• This is the ‘Free-Assembly HomePage’, a unique library of public interest research & activism, and a forum of rare ideas. You will find stories of past & ongoing efforts to preserve rights of association, expression, prayer, & stewardship… archives on relevant policy issues and case law not found anywhere else… and tools & resources for effective advocacy.
**PLEASE NOTE: This website is in full reconstruction… apologies for the deferred content, and an Advisory on attempted ‘Comments’: There is nothing to talk about yet, all posts to date have been dumped as spam, and that channel is shut down. Some good interactive features will be set up later for honest topical discourse, in the right way.
For more info & lore about the Rainbow Gatherings, please see www.welcomehome.org, also a project of individual volunteers.
